What Are Guarantees of Origin

A Guarantee of Origin (GO) is an electronic certificate proving the origin of energy — specifying the source, the production facility, and the time period in which the energy was generated. Guarantees of Origin are defined by European legislation and issued by an authorized authority in compliance with EECS rules and the AIB association. GOs provide transparent information to consumers, support renewable energy sources, and enable trading of green energy attributes across the European Union.

XMtrade®/GOS is a comprehensive information system designed for market operators and authorized authorities to manage energy Guarantees of Origin. The system covers the entire GO lifecycle — from issuance based on verified metering data, through domestic and cross-border transfers through AIB HUB platform, to cancellation against end-consumers. The platform supports various energy commodities, including electricity, gas, heat/cold, and hydrogen.

The system also facilitates GO trading through auctions, either by selling guarantees directly from the registry operator or via an open marketplace where market participants can submit bids and offers.

XMtrade®/GOS is fully compatible with the AIB HUB platform, enabling secure exchange of Guarantees of Origin between national registries of AIB member states. It is built as a robust infrastructure, suitable for national energy markets and long-term development of the GO system.

How the system works

XMtrade®/GOS covers the entire lifecycle of Guarantees of Origin – from issuance through transfers and auction trading to cancellation or expiry. All key processes are managed in one central platform, ensuring full control and compliance with both national and European market rules.

Key Features of the XMtrade®/GOS System

The system provides comprehensive management of account holders within the national Guarantees of Origin registry, including the option to synchronize data with other AIB members. Account holders—primarily energy producers and suppliers—can access the registry, manage their Guarantees of Origin, and participate in auctions. The system also includes a registry of production facilities that meet the legislative and technical requirements for the issuance of Guarantees of Origin.

XMtrade®/GOS issues Guarantees of Origin to producers based on verified metered energy production and its delivery to the grid. Active Guarantees of Origin can be transferred between domestic and foreign account holders until they are cancelled or reach the end of their validity period. The system automatically handles the expiry of Guarantees of Origin in accordance with defined rules.

Cross‑border transfers of Guarantees of Origin between national registries are carried out via the AIB Hub. XMtrade®/GOS is fully compliant with AIB rules and ensures secure and transparent certificate transfers between member countries.

The system supports auctions of Guarantees of Origin issued by the market operator, for example in cases where Guarantees of Origin are linked to energy production supported by other forms of state aid. In auctions, Guarantees of Origin are categorized by production type and remaining validity period. The auction mechanism is based on the pay‑as‑bid principle.

XMtrade®/GOS provides settlement of fees related to account maintenance, issuance, and transfers of Guarantees of Origin within defined settlement periods. In the case of auctions, the system evaluates the resulting transactions and generates invoicing data based on the achieved prices.
